Richard Whateley Holmes |
Richard Whateley Holmes was born on the 21st June 1863 to William Holmes and Caroline, née Whateley. He was christened at St Thomas Birmingham 28th May 1865. He emigrated to Australia, on the Le Hogue, as an assisted immigrant, arriving in Sydney 26.2.1868, joining his older brother George in Armidale, New South Wales, Australia. He married Margaret Jennings, daughter of Michael Jennings and Susan, in 1887 in Armidale. Richard was a blacksmith at least from 1903-1915. In 1913-15 the business was called Richard W Holmes & Son. From 1916 to 1926 he lived at the Railway Hotel (picture below), probably as proprietor, presumably following his brother into running a hotel. However in 1930 and 1936 he is at 58 Norton Street, Ashfield, NSW, as a blacksmith again.
Richard died in 1943 in Burwood, NSW, Margaret in about 1921 in Strathfield, Annandale, NSW.
They had the following children: -
Mildred Holmes born 1887 in Armidale, d 1925 in Armidale. She married William J Gwynne in 1922 in Armidale, he died
1930 in Tamworth.
Ivy Holmes born 1888 in Armidale, died in 1952 in Burwood, NSW. She married Clement Frazer (probably originally
Fraatz in 1917 in Armidale. He died 1976 ‘late of Marrickville’. He was a hairdresser.
Elsie Holmes b 1890 in Tamworth NSW, died 1949 Annandale, NSW
Richard W Holmes born about December 1891, died 8.2.1892 aged 2 months, and was buried in Armidale Cemetery.
Amy Holmes born 1893 in Armidale, married Reginald Moraghan, son of Thomas Moraghan and Alice Twohig in 1915.
Amy died in 1968 in Bankstown, and Reginald 1986 in Sydney. Reginald was a telegraphist and clerk in the 1930s.

Doris Olga Moraghan b 1915 in Armidale, d 16.12.2003 ‘late of Fairlight’. She married James Henry Street
in 1942 at Armidale. He was b London in 1908. Children were Judith and Geoff Street. James died 1986.
Marjorie Irene Moraghan b1917 in Armidale, d after 2003. She married Wesley Alfred Hawkins in Canterbury NSW in 1945.
Wesley died in 1993. They had two children, Paul who died before 1993, and John
Roy Allan Moraghan b 1.10.1918 in Armidale, d 27.11.2003 in Malabar (or Ray). He married Thelma Beatrice Gray 1940 in Victoria, he had
two children Craig and Carol. Thelma must have died as he married Elizabeth Joyce Thorpe in 1951 in Wallsend. More about Roy/Ray
Pat Moraghan (probably Patricia) married Don McGregor
Frederick Holmes born 1895 in Armidale, d 1959 in Balmain, NSW He fought in the first world war, being invalided out. He was a grocer at that time.
He was still living with his parents in 1930 and 1936 as a labourer.
Olga Holmes born 1902 in Armidale, died 3.8.1984 ‘late of Ashfield’, married Harold Frank Thomlinson, an accountant, in 1922 in Armidale. They had (at least) one son
Colin Thomlinson, born 7 Jul 1923 in Hobart Tasmania. Frank died 20.3.1942 in Ashfield, NSW. Olga remarried William Albert Nott in 1950 in Burwood, NSW.
He died 18 Jun 1979 in Arthur Street, Ashfield, NSW.
Allen Whateley Holmes born 1905 in Armidale, died 1962 in Newcastle NSW. He married Alice A Meehan in 1929 at Quirindi, NSW.
