Joseph was born about October quarter 1856 to William and Caroline née Whateley. He was christened on 03 Nov 1856 at Saint Martin, Birmingham, Warwick Avenue.

He was an errand boy at 14 years of age, when his father died, he was looked after by elder sister Susannah.

He married Catherine Allen of Ireland (place unknown), daughter of Abraham, some time before 1878 , possibly in Ireland

By 1881 he is working as a brushmaker in Bolton, though He wife and first two children are not present, perhaps in Ireland. He was probably in Swansea at some time, as his second daughter Rosaline was born there.

He lived in Blackburn at least between 1891 and 1901, still as a brushmaker.
